Flooding expected in some areas as weather warnings come into effect

A Status Orange rain warning for Cork and Kerry came into effect at 3am this morning, and is in place until 6pm.

MOTORISTS AND ROAD users have been warned to take extra care as wind and rain warnings come into effect this morning for the western and south western parts of the country.

A Status Orange rain warning for Cork and Kerry came into effect at 3am this morning, and is in place until 6pm. Met Éireann said there will be “significant” rainfall accumulations, which may result in hazardous travelling conditions.

Separate Status Yellow rain warnings for Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Donegal, Connacht and Tipperary are also in effect.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) warned road users to take extra care, saying spells of heavy rain will increase the risk of flooding due to high river levels and saturated ground.

Motorists are advised to slow down, to avoid flooded roads, and drive with dipped headlights. Pedestrians are advised to walk on the right-hand side of the road, facing traffic if there are no footpaths, and to ensure they are wearing high visibility clothing.

The latest forecast from Met Éireann states that it will be a damp and blustery start to the day, with rain and drizzle turning heavy at times, especially in the south and west.

Flooding is likely in some areas, as a result of high river levels and saturated soils.

There will be temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, in fresh to strong and gusty southwesterly winds. Tonight will be clearer, with outbreaks of rain gradually clearing southeastwards, though rain may linger in some areas.

Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees. Next week will start dry, but will worsen as the week progresses.
